Antiinflammatory and antioxidant activity of plants used in traditional medicine in Ecuador

Ethanolic extracts from 15 plant species, representing eight different families, used in traditional medicine in Ecuador were evaluated for anti inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Conyza floribunda, Eupatorium articulatum, Bonafousia longituba, Bonafousia sananho, Tagetes pusilla and Piper lenticellosum extracts showed a significant anti inflammatory activity in vivo in the carrageenan-induced paw oedema model in mice.

DNA hypermethylation induces cancer progression involving CpG island of DNA and causes inactivation of tumour suppressor genes. In this study, DNA hypermethylation status of lung cancer and ability of ultra-highly diluted Condurango 30C to modulate DNA methylation were ascertained by analysis of lung cancer-specific tumour suppressor genes in respect to placebo.

In traditional systems of medicine including homeopathy, the Condurango extract (Con) is often used to cure stomach cancer mainly, without having any scientific validation of its anti-cancer ability. Con has therefore been tested against non-small-cell lung cancer cells (NSCLC) A549 and NCI-H522 (H522) known to contain the KRAS mutation, making them resistant to most chemotherapeutic agents.

Ultra-highly diluted plant extracts of Hydrastis canadensis and Marsdenia condurango induce epigenetic modifications and alter gene expression profiles in HeLa cells in vitro

Methylation-specific epigenetic process and gene expression profiles of HeLa cells treated with ultra-high dilutions (HDs) of two plant extracts, Hydrastis canadensis (HC-30) and Marsdenia condurango (Condu-30), diluted 1060 times, were analyzed against placebo 30C (Pl-30) for alterations in gene profiles linked to epigenetic modifications.
